While there are many excellent resources that show why and how Christian Nationalism is incompatible with the historic teachings of Christianity, there are few resources available for those working to reach out to Christian Nationalists in our communities, churches, and families.

Disarming Leviathan fills that void by providing practical tools and resources for people seeking to reach Christian Nationalists with the hope-filled message of the gospel of Jesus.

Disarming Leviathan works to:

  1. Provide a deeper understanding of the modern American Christian Nationalist movements and their relationship to American Evangelicalism.
  2. Explore reasons why so many of our loved ones are committed to it.
  3. Identify the cultural values and practices of the primary ethnic groups and adhere to American Christian Nationalists.
  4. Equip Jesus-followers with loving, hospitable methods for engaging American Christian Nationalists.
  5. Foster empathy and solidarity (when possible) for those committed to American Christian Nationalism.
  6. Provide graciously subversive methods for responding to American Christian Nationalist rhetoric, beliefs, and practices.
  7. Encourage you to lead with hospitality and to model the way of Jesus within your community.

Guiding Scripture

American Christian Nationalists often turn to nationalism out of fear of losing safety, belonging, and purpose. Organizations that promote Christian Nationalism often reinforce these fears by stoking fear, anxiety, and rage in order to generate revenue, influence, and power. Those seeking to reach them must do so with a gentle spirit.

Brothers and sisters, if someone is overtaken in any wrongdoing, you who are spiritual, restore such a person with a gentle spirit, watching out for yourselves so that you also won’t be tempted. Carry one another’s burdens; in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Galatians 6:1-2

About the Name: ‘Disarming Leviathan’

The Biblical authors recognized that there are spiritual forces at work in the world that promise peace and prosperity while feeding on chaos, demanding allegiance, and eventually, sacrifice as a spiritual reality. They talked about it in a variety of ways, and often imagined it as an embodied reality sometimes referred to as The Serpent, The Dragon, the Beast…. or, Leviathan.
